It seems to me that ego is getting so much bad rap these days, to the extend that our misconceptions of it are just not helpful for our development anymore. And most of that happens out of misunderstandings on how the ego is to serve us rather than actual truth.
To think that our ego is 'in the way' of our awakening and spiritual fulfillment is like saying that our beloved partner is in the way of our experiencing deep intimacy!
It is not possible.
It's not ego that is the problem here..it's our perspective that has it mixed up and that is what needs sorting out.
It is time we re-educate ourselves the truth
on the true value and function of ego.
As without ego we could not function in the world or create conditions to thrive and succeed.
What equals a healthy ego?
So yes we can still enjoy all things human and be spiritual :)
Without our ego, we would be unable to function healthily in the world, express our preferences and ideas, have a well defined value system or leave any kind of legacy.
Does that mean we never strive to transform the aspects of our ego we are not so keen on? Of course not. Change can be had where we wish to create it, yet there is no need to throw the baby out of the bathwater.
Now if you re one of those spiritual types that are eager to access emptiness and you think you need to let go of all these things that link you to your experience, know this:
We need to have a healthy sense of ego first
before we make our way further beyond
the personal dimension to the trans personal.
We cannot skip this step straight to awakening and take permanent residence on enlightenment street. Momentarily sure, it could be done and experienced as a kundalini awakening, as we can bypass our 'stuff' and have moments of unity. But for that to take effect permanently, is not psychologically viable.
And guess what, unless we choose to live in a cave for the rest of our lives, we do not have to let go of our likes and dislikes, preferences and aversions. We just need to learn to hold less a firm grip around them that's all. There is a big difference in the two.
The Light and Dark Side of Ego.
Like all things and experiences in life, ego has its shadow and light aspects and whilst we keep seeing its value one-dimensionally through a negative lense, we entirely miss out on how we can best utilize its mechanisms to liberate ourselves from our own shackles.
When we actually choose to condemn ego,
in reality what we are condemning
is our own capability to SEE through & ACT beyond
the constraints of human personality
where ego resides.
THAT limited perceiving is what makes us slaves to a human condition and NOT ego itself. From that place of imprisonment we choose to blame the very stuff we are made of, which is a stark contrast from being in a place of enjoying and playing with what we have been gifted with.
Choosing to really let that truth sink into our consciousness, is a way of us starting to see things as part of the bigger picture that builds the human puzzle.
As we start to change our understanding and relationship to ego, we end up embracing it more, and in that embrace is where we potentially claim our REAL freedom.
Looking at it from a particular perspective, It is almost quite amusing to project so much negativity to a human mechanism when it is us that navigate it. It's like blaming the steering wheel for where it's taking us when it is us that are driving the car in the first place.
Rather than blaming ego for the state of things, we should instead be using our alchemical energies to utilize its potential. Failure to do so means we do not understand certain key elements about the way life and the universe works.
Here are some key universal laws:
Everything in Life Has Intrinsic Potential.
It is best to look at the polarities that exist in our ego as an energetic mechanism, in a way that we would look at the negative and positive polarities of a battery.
We never judge a battery as being bad. Well that would be ridiculous.
It is just energy with negative and positive spectrums. Those spectrums are important and needed to make the battery fully functional by making a whole, the actual battery.
Same thing with ego..
Life offers enough contrast for us to experience
the full capacity of both
the negative & positive polarities of our ego.
Failing to see that is resisting to see the bigger picture of our human experience needing to express itself.
Polarity Highlights the Deconstructed Parts of a Whole.
This is not only a more empowered and less judgmental way of looking at our human experience, it is also a more holistic, integrated and realistic one.
By attaching positive and negative value to things and mechanisms, we essentially keep ourselves locked in judgement and we are unable to move into and merge with the diverse, multi-faceted experience of the 'bigger picture' that is source energy.
In Life we are to Make Fuel With what IS.
Simply by accepting the fullness of who we are, we are learning to come into our being as more integrated wholesome beings, without judgement of our raw material and mechanisms.
From that place is easier to also make changes we wish to make.
So i would like to leave you with a list of some reason why ego is needed:
Next time we think about how 'bad' ego is, we need to think twice on that perhaps being a distortion of our own mind.
Here is an affirmation to help you with this.
As i go through life,
i learn to embrace all that is me.
My ego is here to teach me who i am
through what i love and what im resisting.
I learn to embrace it all, equally and with love
as source energy loves me unconditionally.
And source energy is who i am.
